The Story

Where This Essence Began

Wild Azalea flower — delicate lavender petals growing wild in the Puna district of Hawaiʻi Island

Wild Azalea Self Love is one of the original flower essences in the Hawaiian Rainforest Naturals collection, part of the healing practice Melia Goodenow and her mother, Joy Johnson, began together in 1992.

Growing wild in the Puna district of Hawaiʻi Island, Wild Azalea is a beautiful, high-vibrational flower with delicate, soft lavender petals. There is a gentleness to this flower that reflects the essence itself — inviting us to soften the way we see ourselves and look within without judgment.

This essence holds a distinct place in the collection: it is the one made for how we see ourselves right now, rather than what we're carrying from the past. Wild Azalea helps us soften the way we see ourselves—moving from judgment toward compassion, acceptance, and love. This flower essence helps to stop the reflex of self-criticism and opens the door to acceptance, exactly as you are.

“ Melia — on Wild Azalea Self Love

"Wild Azalea reminds us that we do not have to become someone different before we are worthy of love. We are love and loved right now just as we are. Love comes from many sources, not just people. Nature is a big source of love and it does not judge. When you smell a rose, the rose does not say, "you are bad and what you have done is unacceptable, I will not give you my fragrance." No, it shares its lovely fragrance with all."

"Forgive yourself. Accept yourself. That will free you so you can move forward as the beautiful person you already are."

— Melia Goodenow

The Teaching

Rooted in Living Lineage

In Hawaiian healing, balance begins within. Through the teachings of hoʻoponopono, we learn the importance of making things right—not only in our relationships with others, but also in the relationship we have with ourselves.

Wild Azalea carries this teaching beautifully. Self-love is not ego or indulgence. It is learning to meet yourself with honesty, compassion, and acceptance so you can move through life from a place of greater balance — Pono.

When we change the relationship we have with ourselves, we strengthen the way we connect with our families and communities, and ultimately change the way we meet and contribute to the world.

“ Papa Henry Auwae's Teaching

"You must put your own health first. If you don't value yourself, you will not be able to heal someone else."

Since 1992, Melia and Joy have handcrafted these essences using wisdom passed down by Kahuna Lāʻau Lapaʻau and other native plant medicine healers — always in a state of pono, always with prayer and permission.

Wild Azalea carries Papa Auwae's teaching forward — reminding us that self-love is not selfish. It is not about ego or indulgence. It is the foundation from which all healing begins.

The Plant

Wild Azalea Rhododendron

Wild Azalea grows wild in the Puna district of Hawaiʻi Island, on the slopes of the active volcano — one of several wild rhododendron species HRN harvests from areas with little to no human contact. Like every plant in the collection, the flower carries the energy of the place it grows.

In the HRN flower essence collection, each plant is associated with a chakra energy center. Wild Azalea is the essences connected to the Crown Chakra — the center associated with meditation, spiritual connection, and experiencing one's own spirit directly. This is why Wild Azalea supports not only self-acceptance but also a felt connection to something larger than yourself. This is distinct from Papaya's Sacral Chakra association or Lehua's Root Chakra association; each plant works at a different level of the energy body.

Wild Azalea is gathered only in the Puna District of Hawaiʻi Island. All HRN flower essences are hand-gathered wild or organically grown, prepared through the same permission-based process Melia and Joy have practiced since 1992.

What Shifts

What This Essence Supports

Wild Azalea helps soften the inner critic and invites you to look at yourself without judgment—with greater compassion, acceptance, and love.

Self-love doesn't mean believing you've done everything perfectly. We have all made mistakes and choices we wish we could change. True self-love means being able to look honestly at who you are and what you've experienced without turning those experiences into a judgment about your worth.

Wild Azalea helps open the heart to compassion for self. From this gentler place, forgiveness becomes possible. We can learn from the past without continuing to live in its fear, guilt, or shame. When you can love and accept yourself as you are right now, you become freer to trust yourself, make new choices, and create a life that reflects who you truly are.

Wild Azalea flower essence also activates the Crown Chakra, supporting meditation and a felt connection to your own spirit. The crown chakra is the pathway to your higher self, your spirit. Spirit is always loving and supporting your journey.

Like all HRN flower essences, it works on an energetic level. Cleaning out old energy and emotional blocks. Once cleared you can feel the energy of love and know that it is all around you.

When This Essence Serves You

Wild Azalea meets self-judgment wherever it shows up — in the inner critic, in isolation, in the belief that love has to be earned.

Wild Azalea Self Love flower essence — Hawaiian Rainforest Naturals

The Relentless Inner Critic

For those caught in a loop of self-criticism — replaying what they said wrong, what they did wrong, what they should've done instead. Wild Azalea helps loosen the habit of continual fault finding.

Feeling Judged by Others

For those who often feel like they're being watched and evaluated, even in ordinary moments. This essence supports a steadier internal ground that doesn't depend on others' approval.

Isolation and Disconnection

For those who feel isolated, unlovable, or cut off from their own spirit. Wild Azalea's connection to the Crown Chakra supports the felt sense of not being alone — of belonging to something larger.

Deepening Meditation Practice

For those working with meditation who want to activate the Crown Chakra — supporting stillness, spiritual connection, and the direct experience of one's own spirit.

Creative Block

For artists and creatives stuck by self-judgment before an idea even has a chance to form. Combined with Lehua as the Inspiration Combination, Wild Azalea helps clear the way for creative self-expression.

Guilt Layered With Self-Judgment

For those whose guilt about the past has hardened into a harsher story about who they are. Combined with Papaya as the Guilt Relief Combination, Wild Azalea addresses the self-judgment layer directly.

Who This Is For

You Might Need This Essence If...

Wild Azalea Self Love flower essence — Hawaiian Rainforest Naturals

There's a voice in your head that's never satisfied. It notices what you got wrong before you've even finished the sentence. It compares you to who you think you should be, and you almost never win.

Maybe you assume people are judging you, even when there's no evidence of it. Maybe you feel like you have to earn love and belonging — that being fully yourself, unfiltered, isn't safe or acceptable. Maybe the joy other people seem to access easily feels just out of reach for you.

This essence was made for that inner critic — not to silence it by force, but to soften its grip so a gentler, truer voice can be heard underneath it. Wild Azalea helps us by softening the voice of the inner critic so we can hear our true voice which is full of self-acceptance. When we can hear that, something inside us opens. We become freer to trust ourselves, make new choices, and become the true masters of our own lives — creating a life based not on old fear or shame, but on what we genuinely want for ourselves.

“ Melia — on Wild Azalea Self Love

"When we first made Wild Azalea flower essence I was flooded with the guidance to go and be alone and take it. I didn't understand why. Why do I need to be alone to experience this medicine? We even had originally called it, 'The Bliss of Being Alone' And it was so blissful and playful. After awhile it finally got through to me! I was feeling good all by myself, just as I am. I didn't need anyone else's approval or presence to feel happy and loved. I was feeling loved even though I was alone. This realization cracked my 'Cinderella complex' that says we need to have a partner to truly feel loved. I was feeling loved just by being."

How to Use

Working With This Essence

  1. Under the Tongue

5 drops directly under the tongue, or in water, juice, or tea. Standard use is 3–4 times daily.

  2. Add to Water

10 drops in your water bottle for sustained support through the day — useful when self-critical thoughts tend to build over the course of a day rather than appear all at once.

  3. Use Before Meditation

Because this essence activates the Crown Chakra, taking it a few minutes before sitting in meditation can support deeper stillness and a more direct experience of your own spirit.

  4. Combine for Specific Situations

With Papaya for Guilt Relief — guilt paired with self-judgment. With Lehua for Inspiration — moving through a creative block. When combining more than 2 essences, decrease to 3 drops of each.

Questions

About This Essence

Wild Azalea Self Love flower essence — Hawaiian Rainforest Naturals

What does "Self Love" mean with Wild Azalea?

The primary indication for Wild Azalea is Self Love. But self-love is more than feeling good about yourself. It is the ability to care for, accept, and have compassion for yourself exactly as you are today.

We have all made mistakes. We have all made choices we wish we could change. Wild Azalea helps us look at those parts of ourselves with greater compassion, so we can begin to forgive ourselves and move beyond the fear, guilt, and shame that can keep us connected to the past.

This is where the essence becomes especially powerful. It helps us to stop judging ourselves for who we were or what we have done. Then we can see ourselves more clearly and in a place of reality. Self-forgiveness allows the past to become wisdom instead of something fearful that continues to define us.

What is the difference between Wild Azalea Self Love and Papaya Letting Go?

Wild Azalea addresses self-perception — how you see and judge yourself right now. Papaya addresses release — letting go of past mistakes and old patterns. They're often paired as the Guilt Relief Combination for people whose guilt about the past has become tangled with harsh self-judgment in the present.

What does it mean that this essence activates the Crown Chakra?

In the HRN essence collection, each plant corresponds to a different chakra center. The Crown Chakra, at the top of the head, is associated with meditation, spiritual connection, and the direct experience of one's own spirit. Wild Azalea is formulated to support this center — which is part of why it pairs naturally with meditation practice, not only with self-love work in the everyday sense.

What is the Inspiration Combination?

Inspiration combines Wild Azalea and Lehua in a 2oz bottle, made for creative self-expression — for those who feel blocked before an idea even has room to form. Wild Azalea addresses the self-judgment that often shows up first ("this isn't good enough"), while Lehua supports reconnecting to genuine feeling and intuition.

What is the Guilt Relief Combination and how is it different from Wild Azalea alone?

Guilt Relief combines Wild Azalea and Papaya in a 2oz bottle, specifically for guilt that has turned into harsh self-judgment. Wild Azalea alone is broader — it addresses self-criticism generally, whether or not there's a specific guilt-producing event behind it. If your self-judgment traces back to something you did or didn't do, Guilt Relief is the more targeted formula.

Can I combine Wild Azalea with other flower essences?

Yes. Wild Azalea appears in two pre-blended formulas:

  • Guilt Relief (Wild Azalea + Papaya) — for guilt tangled with self-judgment
  • Inspiration (Wild Azalea + Lehua) — for creative self-expression and moving through a block

Wild Azalea is also one of the three plants in the Natural Bliss Formula, alongside Lehua and Bamboo Orchid, for overall well-being and lightheartedness.

When combining more than two essences, use 3 drops of each instead of the standard 5.

“ Melia — on Wild Azalea Self Love

My clients would always talk about themselves which such harshness and blame. They would say things about themselves they would never say to someone they loved and they really felt it was true. The voice in their head was relentless, and it was keeping them small. Wild Azalea showed up as the answer — a gentle, softening presence that helped them see themselves through kinder eyes.
