The Story
Papaya Letting Go is one of the original flower essences in the Hawaiian Rainforest Naturals collection — part of the healing practice Melia Goodenow and her mother, Joy Johnson, began together on Hawaiʻi Island in 1992. Made from a single plant, it draws on wild and organically grown papaya gathered from the Puna, Kaʻu, and Hilo Districts.
Papaya holds a special place in the collection as the essence of release and forgiveness. It helps us loosen our emotional attachment to experiences that are already over, so the past can become something we learn from rather than something we continue to live from.
Papaya reminds us that letting go does not mean forgetting. It means keeping the wisdom while releasing the emotional weight — creating space for peace, possibility, and a new beginning.
I first made Papaya Letting Go in the early 1990s, around the same time we were developing Stress Release. I kept noticing the same thing with my clients — they would talk about something that happened years ago as if it were still happening right now. The emotion was still alive in their body, even though the event was long over.
Papaya showed up as the answer. I started working with the papaya flower, and I could feel it — a gentle, patient presence that didn't force anything, just helped things move. The plant taught me that release doesn't have to be dramatic. It can be as natural as a fruit ripening and falling from the tree. You just have to be willing to let it go.
Melia has written more about the deeper meaning of this essence — the plant's connection to the Sacral Chakra, its traditional uses, and what emotional release actually looks like in practice. Read her full article on Papaya Flower Essence →
The Teaching
Melia Goodenow is a teacher of hoʻoponopono, the Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness, carried to her through her mother Joy Johnson's training under Kahuna Lāʻau Lapaʻau, Morrnah Simeona (1913–1992). Papaya flower essence is made specifically for finding forgiveness and releasing its energetic blocks. This essence works naturally with ho'oponopono - helping us release what has passed, find forgiveness, and return to the present moment.
"You must put your own health first. If you don't value yourself, you will not be able to heal someone else."
Morrnah Simeona taught that the key is to be in Present Time. Papaya Letting Go carries this teaching forward. When we release the past — hurt, anger, regret, guilt — we return to Present Time. It is here that we can see ourselves clearly and make better choices for our lives. Forgiveness is not about forgetting. It's about freeing yourself from what you've been carrying.
For over 30 years, Melia and Joy have handcrafted these essences using wisdom passed down by Kahuna Lāʻau Lapaʻau — always in a state of pono, with prayer and permission.

The Lineage and Legacy →The Plant
Papaya grows freely across Hawaiʻi Island — near homes, gardens, and everyday paths, not hidden deep in the forest. It is one of the more accessible plants in the HRN collection, and one of the fastest-growing, moving from flower to ripe fruit in a matter of months.
In the HRN flower essence collection, each plant is associated with a chakra center. Papaya corresponds to the Sacral Chakra — the seat of emotion, creativity, intimacy, and trust. This is where we hold our ability to connect, to create, and to feel safe in relationship. Lehua, by comparison, corresponds to the Root Chakra, grounding us in safety and survival.
All HRN flower essences are hand-gathered wild or organically grown in the Puna, Kaʻu, and Hilo Districts, prepared through the same permission-based process Melia and Joy have practiced for over 30 years.
Melia has written more about papaya's role in Hawaiian healing tradition, its connection to the Sacral Chakra, and the plant's relationship to digestion and emotional processing. Read her full article →

What Shifts
Sometimes letting go doesn't mean forgetting what happened. It means changing the relationship you have with it.
Papaya gently supports the release of emotional patterns connected to past experiences—mistakes, regrets, disappointments, relationships, and things you wish had happened differently. With Papaya flower essence, that emotional weight begins to soften and you can see the experience from a new perspective. You keep what it taught you without allowing it to continue defining your present.
The past becomes wisdom instead of a place you continue to live.
This brings you back to the power of the present moment—where you can see your life more clearly and make new choices based on who you are today, rather than on fear, guilt, or regret from yesterday. Letting go opens new doors to your good.
Papaya Letting Go is formulated for the release of emotional patterns that keep old situations alive long after they've ended. Letting go and finding forgiveness—with yourself and with others—opens new doors to your good. It doesn't mean forgetting. It means finally being free.
Like all HRN flower essences, it works vibrationally—supporting your emotional body's own capacity to release what it no longer needs to hold.

Papaya Letting Go meets the many faces of holding on — from grief and guilt to old habits and the subtle control patterns that keep us repeating the past.
For those replaying past mistakes and carrying the weight of what they wish they had done differently. Papaya helps you see those experiences as learning rather than evidence of failure — and opens the door to self-forgiveness.
For those stuck in grief — whether from a death, a relationship ending, or a life they had planned that did not come to pass. Papaya supports the natural movement through loss without forcing it. A widow credited it for helping her find closure and move forward with hope.
For those holding on to anger or resentment toward someone who hurt them — even when they want to let it go but cannot. Papaya helps dissolve the energetic grip of old conflicts so forgiveness can become possible.
For those stuck in old behaviors they cannot seem to break — including addictive patterns. Combined with Kīnehe as the Starting Over formula, Papaya supports the release of what has become habitual so a new way can emerge.
For those who carry the day home — replaying conversations, reliving what went wrong, unable to put the day down. The Evening Combination (Papaya and Natural Bliss) was made specifically for this: helping the mind and body release the day so rest can actually arrive.
For those who feel responsible for other people's problems, who need to control outcomes to feel safe, or who have given their life choices over to others. Papaya helps release those patterns so a freer way of living becomes available.
How to Use
Under the Tongue
5 drops directly under the tongue, held briefly before swallowing. 3-4 times daily. Morning is grounding; before sleep helps release the day. Be willing to set aside a few quiet moments before taking — Papaya works best when you are receptive. For a deeper effect use daily for 2 weeks.
Add to Water or Tea
10 drops in your water bottle for sustained support. Particularly useful during periods of active grief, forgiveness work, or when releasing an old pattern that shows up throughout the day.
Use Before Sleep — or as the Evening Combination
5 drops under the tongue before bed helps release the emotional residue of the day. The Evening Combination (Papaya and Natural Bliss, pre-blended 2oz) is specifically designed for this transition — letting go of the day so rest can follow.
Combine for Specific Situations
With Wild Azalea for Guilt Relief. With Tī for Serenity (finding peace with the past). With Kīnehe for Starting Over (releasing unhealthy habits). When combining more than 2 essences, decrease to 3 drops of each.
Who This Is For
You know what happened. You've explained it, maybe even said you've forgiven it. But something in you is still there — still replaying it, still bracing, still carrying the weight of it as if it were happening now.
Maybe it's guilt about a choice you made. Maybe it's a relationship that ended and still feels like it's happening inside you. Maybe it's resentment toward someone who hurt you, and even though you want to let it go, something keeps pulling you back.
This essence was made for that grip — for the parts of the past that are technically over but haven't finished happening in your body.
I saw the same pattern over and over — people carrying guilt and regret like a physical weight. They would tell me about something that happened decades ago, and their shoulders would still be up around their ears, their jaw still tight. The past wasn't over for them. It was still happening in their body. Papaya Letting Go was the answer. It helped them release what they'd been carrying so they could finally be present — not just think about being present, but actually feel it.
Questions
Papaya helps you release the past. Wild Azalea helps you love and forgive yourself through it. Papaya supports letting go of the emotional attachment to past experiences, mistakes, relationships, and patterns. Wild Azalea works more deeply with how you see yourself—helping soften self-judgment and bring compassion, acceptance, and love back to yourself. Together, they are especially supportive when guilt or regret is making it difficult to move forward. Papaya says: Let it go. Wild Azalea says: And love yourself through it.
The Evening Combination pairs Papaya with Natural Bliss Formula in a 2oz bottle, made for those who have trouble letting go of the day. When the isuues at work won't stay there and now you are home and want to relax and enjoy your family. Papaya on its own is better suited to deeper, ongoing release work — grief, resentment, or long-held guilt — rather than a daily end-of-day ritual.
Yes — combined with Kīnehe as the Starting Over Combination, it's specifically formulated for releasing unhealthy habits and addictions. Kīnehe supports the fresh start; Papaya supports letting go of what kept the old pattern in place.
Serenity combines Papaya with Tī Clear Mind in a 2oz bottle, formulated for those whose minds keep circling back to negative thoughts or images from the past. It's designed to clear out repetitive thoughts and find a new perspective on what is causing these thoughts. When we can see our situations in a new light we can find compassion on what happened.
Yes. HRN essences are designed to be combined. Papaya appears in four pre-blended formulas — Evening, Starting Over, Guilt Relief, and Serenity — and can also be combined individually with essences like Banana or Stress Release Formula. When combining more than two essences, use 3 drops of each instead of the standard 5.
HRN offers four pre-blended combinations that include Papaya:
