Rooted in the rainforest of Hawaiʻi

Ecology & Mana

Our work begins with a relationship to the land. For more than 30 years, the rainforest, its plants, and the teachings we received have shaped our lives, business and everything we do.

Rooted in the Rainforest

A Relationship With Place

With our roots in the Puna rainforest on Hawaiʻi Island, every one of our flower essences carries the living mana — the spiritual life force — of the Hawaiian rainforest. This is where rain meets lava, and new life is constantly reborn. The land itself is the first healer. Its energy, rhythm, and balance shape every essence created here.

Each bottle carries this living connection — the pulse of rain, the breath of wind through the ʻŌhiʻa trees, the quiet heartbeat of volcanic soil. This is not symbolic; it’s vibrational truth. The mana of Hawai‘i infuses every drop.

The Rainforest as Teacher

Learning From the Living Landscape

The Puna rainforest is a place of constant change. Rain, volcanic soil, sunlight, wind, and new growth all shape the landscape. Native plants such as ʻŌhiʻa Lehua are part of an ecosystem that has adapted to Hawaiʻi's unique environment over generations.

For Melia, this landscape became both home and teacher. It showed her that healing is cyclical — that every ending births new life. When she creates an essence, she is in conversation with that intelligence — the same intelligence that makes the forest thrive.

“The forest has its own heartbeat and it is in rhythm with your heart. It teaches balance by living it.” — Melia Goodenow

What does the rainforest teach us?

It reminds us to pay attention. Plants have their own seasons and rhythms. Some flowers are ready to gather while others are not. Working respectfully with the land means knowing when to take and when to leave something untouched. For us, this is part of following our traditional protocols.

The Mana of Hawaiʻi

Life Force Made Visible

Mana is the life energy present in all things — the unseen current that animates both nature and spirit. In Hawai‘i, mana is sacred. It cannot be manufactured or owned; it flows through right relationship with the land, through gratitude, humility, and care.

We do not think of mana as something that can be manufactured or packaged. Instead, our respect for mana is reflected in the way we approach our work. We pray before gathering, ask permission, follow the protocols we were taught, take only what we need, and give thanks.

Every one of our flower essences carries mana because it is made in harmony with this principle. When the process is pono — balanced and respectful — the mana of the plants willingly become medicine.

ʻŌhiʻa Lehua: A Native Symbol of Hawaiʻi

Resilience, Beauty, and Cultural Tradition

ʻŌhiʻa Lehua is one of Hawaiʻi's best-known native plants. Its bright blossoms can be found across the islands, often growing in landscapes shaped by volcanic activity. The plant also holds an important place in Hawaiian stories and traditions.

One well-known moʻolelo tells the story of ʻŌhiʻa and Lehua, whose love became connected to the flower and tree that bear their names. The lovers become seperated by Pele, the fiery volcano goddess. But there love could not die, even by the hand of great Pele who turns ʻŌhiʻa into a tree. Lehua appeals to the other dieties and she becomes the lovely lehua flower. Though no longer human they remain eternally together showing the endurance and strenght of love.

For HRN, ʻŌhiʻa Lehua embodies the essence of Hawaiian healing itself — transformation through love. Many of our formulas contain the essence from these blossoms, capturing the frequency of renewal, courage, and heart-led healing.

“The ʻŌhiʻa reminds us that love is stronger than fire — and that beauty can grow from ash.” — Melia Goodenow
